Survey BEFORE You Dig!

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

outdoor project tools and equipment Before you break ground on a project, call a land surveyor to locate where underground system lines are.

The summertime is an ideal time to tackle those outdoor projects you have been planning all year. Whether somebody wants to optimize their yard space by building planters, a pool, an inground fire pit or attempting the trend of creating small garden ponds, it is important to survey the yard before attempting any outdoor, DIY project. Failing to complete this task may lead to a slew of issues, including ones that require SERVPRO services.

SERVPRO recommends locating where gas and water lines are underneath the surface to avoid hitting a utility line. If a power tool does come in contact with these lines, the consequences can spread through the town with large power outages and sewer mishaps.

Locating utility lines can be done by calling 811, as you will be directed to a service that can survey your property and mark the lines. So, the next time you plan to dig on your land, survey it BEFORE you break ground!

Someone P.A.S.S the Fire Extinguisher

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Fire extinguisher hanging on the wall Notice how this fire extinguisher is easy to locate, which makes putting out a fire easier when it's easy to identify.

As a business owner, your employees look for guidance and help. You train your employees for their role in your company, but you should also teach them the company's expectations of understanding protocols. A business should teach their employees things like fire safety and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Let's say a fire breaks out in the staff kitchen due to someone forgetting their lunch was in the microwave. When a fire breaks out, what should you do? What are the steps to working a fire extinguisher? Follow these four simple steps to use a fire extinguisher if you don't know.

  1. Pull the pin. This will break the tamper seal as well.
  2. Aim low; you will want to point the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire.
  3. Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
  4. Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out.

By following the P.A.S.S. method, you can guarantee that your business and employees are safe. Implementing training over how to use extinguisher equipment can ensure your employees can take action to get what needs to get done if a problem arises.

Spray Paint Doesn't Stand A Chance.

11/15/2021 (Permalink)

The destruction of one's businesses is something that we don't want to see. You put endless hours into it to ensure that it's going to be a huge success. When someone does something that damages that pride of joy, you might feel at a loss. Don't sweat it; SERVPRO has Soda Blasting equipment to help clear off any unwanted destruction to the exterior.

Granite is a fine rock that we use to blast char or staining off of materials regarding graffiti. We have two systems that we use, wet and dry, so our Project Manager will look at what route they should take.

Wet System

This system is used in areas that strong abrasive power is required. The product we use is environmentally friendly but still requires some form of cleanup. We can use this product both wet or dry when performing work outside.

Dry System

The dry system is used when the job is inside the business. We use this method when we don't want to get other materials wet.

How it Works

When soda blasting, we have our technicians use full PPE as they will encounter dust particles. We place the area under negative pressure to help eliminate any dust particles that become air-born. An air scrubber will duct the unit out of a window, so the airborne particles have a way to escape. This is followed up with a very detailed cleaning after the work area has been completed.

All vents and returns are covered to isolate the room from the HVAC systems, which may require a duct cleaning after the work is completed. By doing this, we are ensuring that none of the fine dust particles spread throughout the facility. Some areas may require shellac after the blasting is complete, but this isn't always the case.

Vandalism and graffiti can be very upsetting and overwhelming. Vandalism and graffiti can range from relatively minor pranks to malicious destruction of property. Often simple acts of vandalism, like breaking a window, can cause significant water and mold damage if not addressed in a timely manner. Here at SERVPRO of Marshall, Columbia, And Sedalia, we have the capability to help with this property damage. We offer vandalism removal as part of our many services. Our removal product is placed on a brush and rolled/painted on with some sort of applicator to the affected surface. The product is power-washed off to remove the paint after the necessary dwell time. As you can see, there are two layers of paint, so the process would be repeated to remove the other layer. We can do a board-up which is done after a storm, fire or vandalism incident where the building is exposed. It is meant to prevent further damage from happening to the facility.

Do you Know How to Turn Off Your Water Supply?

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

We offer a no cost assessment of your facility and provide property details such as shut-off valve locations.

The amount of water that can leak from a 1/2-inch pipe is about 50 gallons per minute. If the pipe breaks and is left unattended for up to 12 hours, you could have up to 36,000 gallons of water damaging your business. To gain some perspective, a 20 X 40-foot pool (6 feet in depth) holds about 36,000 gallons of water.

Time is of the essence to shut off the water to your property. Review these helpful tips before water strikes:

  • Main shut off valves are usually located by the entrance of the water in the commercial building.
  • You will usually find a water meter box close to the street, as well.
  • If you are unable to locate your main water shut off, reach out to your local water department.
  • Once found, make it a point to let employees know the main shut off location(s).

It is always best to be prepared and SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia, and Columbia is here to help. We are here when the unthinkable water damage occurs and will get your business back to normal.

Winter Ready Business

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

Get back to business quickly when winter strikes your property.

It may be hard to believe, but winter is right around the corner. In Mid-Missouri we can experience ice, cold winters with sleet, snow, ice, and damaging winds. We may not be able to control Mother Nature, but we can take action by getting the property winter ready with these precautions.

  • Check property for downed tree limbs and branches. Winter conditions could cause branches to fall causing damage to property or person injuries.
  • Inspect roofs, water pipes, and gutters. Clear gutters of any debris from the fall to prevent a damming effect. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building.
  • Inspect walkways and parking lots for proper drainage. This could alleviate a potential flood and/or slip hazard.
  • Entryways, handrails, and stairwells should be checked to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Post caution signs where water may be present and install mats or non-slip surfaces in the dangerous areas.
  • Protect pipes from freezing. Allow water to drip when temperatures go below freezing. Leave cabinet doors open to circulate warm air, if pipes are under them. Consider shutting off water to outdoor faucets and ensure they are properly drained.
  • Emergency Ready Profile. Contact SERVPRO for a no-cost assessment of your facility. It provides you with a plan to get back to business faster following a disaster.

Make sure your business is ready for the bitterly cold weather that may be ahead. If winter weather strikes, SERVPRO of Marshall, Sedalia and Columbia are Here to Help.
